Fact Check: Viral Video of Ship Launch Is From India Shipyard, Not Kenya's Lake Victoria

A video circulating on social media purporting to show the Kenyan government launching a new vessel on Lake Victoria has been debunked. AFP Fact Check traced the footage to a shipyard in southwestern India, where it was filmed in April, and found the vessel has no connection whatsoever to Kenya.

The claim gained traction amid a wave of infrastructure projects being commissioned by President William Ruto. A Facebook post published on June 29, 2026 declared that the president had "officially launched the MV NGEGE into the waters of Lake Victoria," describing it as another milestone in Kenya's push to revitalise affordable water transport.

The post went further, asserting that the "modern vessel" had been built by Kenya Shipyards Limited under a government affordable water transport programme aimed at improving connectivity, boosting trade, supporting fishing communities and easing pressure on roads around the lake region. It accompanied a clip showing a cheering crowd as a large vessel appeared to slide into Lake Victoria, Africa's largest freshwater lake, which borders Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

The false claim found fertile ground because of Ruto's genuine investments along the lake. During a visit to Siaya County on March 24, 2026, the president announced a 9.5 billion shilling package — roughly $73.3 million — to bolster the blue economy along the Kenyan side of Lake Victoria.

At the same event, Ruto presided over the groundbreaking of the Usenge Pier in Bondo constituency, a one billion shilling Kenya Shipyards Limited project designed to improve water transport between Kisumu and Homa Bay counties. In a statement on his official Facebook page, he said the investment was intended to strengthen blue economy activities, create jobs and improve livelihoods for residents of the lake region.

That broader package also included the completed Homa Bay pier, an ongoing pier at Muhuru Bay in Migori County, ten fish landing sites across five riparian counties stretching from Busia to Migori, a 250 million shilling fishermen's rescue centre in Siaya, and 70 million shillings each earmarked for rescue boats and fish cages. The launch of a new ship, however, featured in none of these announcements.

AFP Fact Check found no statement from the Kenyan government, the Kenya Ports Authority or Kenya Shipyards Limited announcing the commissioning of any vessel named "MV Ngege." A review of Kenyan media coverage around the time the claim emerged likewise turned up no reports of such an event.

Notably, the president was elsewhere entirely on the day the purported Kisumu launch was said to have occurred. On June 29, Ruto was in Nairobi commissioning the 3.8 billion shilling, 820-metre Ngong Road-Naivasha Road Flyover.

The viral clip itself carries a telltale origin. Dated April 30, 2026, it bears the title "Launching ceremony of C 312 Hansa Anholt." Its description identifies the ship as an 8,500 deadweight-tonne, diesel-electric, ice class 1B multi-purpose dry cargo vessel belonging to Leonhardt & Blumberg, a German ship management company, launched at Kudroli Bengre in the Thannirubhavi area of Mangalore — officially Mangaluru — in India's Karnataka state.

The original footage runs more than 100 minutes and was published by Chowgule Shipyards. AFP Fact Check compared screenshots from both videos and confirmed the vessels were identical, with matching features including a yellow crane and a floodlight tower.

With no Kenyan paper trail behind the claim and clear visual evidence pointing to the Indian shipyard, the verdict is unambiguous: the video shows a routine commercial launch in India, repurposed to lend false credibility to a fabricated milestone on Lake Victoria.
